What is Tooth Extraction?

Extraction is the procedure of removing the tooth from the socket. It is usually carried out using local anaesthetics for blocking the pain sensation. 

Need for tooth extraction


• Tooth with failed root canal treatment
• For orthodontic treatment purpose
• Retained primary teeth
• Impacted teeth such as canines, 3rd Molar
• Root fragments
• Tooth in the line of fracture
• Prosthetic purpose
• Teeth with fractured root


Risks for Tooth Extraction


Absolute Risks

• Uncontrolled diabetes
• Renal failure
• Leukemia
• Cirrhosis of liver
• Cardiac failure

Extraction is not performed in the absolute risks.

Relative Risks

• Diabetes
• Hypertension
• Cardiac disease such Myocardial Infection, Angina Pectoris & Cardiac Decompensation.
• Patient on steroid theraphy
• Pregnancy
• Blood Dyscrasias such as Anemia, Hemophilia, Leukemia
• Patient on anticoagulant theraphy
• Toxic goitre
• Hepatitis
• Extraction in recently irradiated patients ( Which may cause Osteoradionecrosis)
• Medically compromised patients

In this extraction can be performed after controlling the above risks such as controlling blood sugar level & Blood pressure.

Procedures for tooth extraction


Before proceeding to the extraction, dentist check the above the mentioned risks. Once the risks has been sorted out, local anaesthetics should be injected to block the pain sensation of the extracting tooth using preferred LA Technique. So patient cannot feel the pain while extracting the tooth from the socket. Immediately following the extraction, the extraction site must be gently pressed with finger and guaze is placed to prevent the bleeding or it may be sutured depending on the patient. The healing of extraction site takes places in 7 to 10 days.

Patient are advised don't do these following extraction for atleast 2 days

• Don't Smoke
• Don't Spitting out the saliva or water
• Don't chewing foods on the extracted site instead use the opposite side for chewing foods
• Don't take spicy foods
 
If you won't follow the above instructions, it may lead to the condition called Dry Socket.

Costs for tooth extraction


Tooth extraction costs basically ranges from ₹300 upto ₹5000  (In India) and sometimes it may beyond that based on the dentist. Third molar impaction extraction has more costs than the other normal tooth.

Answer

You can eat only soft, semi-liquid foods on the opposite side of the extraction site for atleast 2 days. After that the you can eat the food as normal. Don't forget not to eat or drink hot foods and  hot liquids for atleast 2-3 days following tooth extraction.
